Dear Paco:

I was delighted to see in a recent issue of the New York Times that Charles Poore had read your book and liked it. Yesterday, when I lunched with Francis Brown, who edits the Sunday Book Review, he told me that he plans to be carrying a review and that it should be published either May 17th or 24th.

Whether you like these two reviews or not is, if I may say so, less important at the present moment than that they are published. There used to be a famous saying, credited either to a politician or a circus manager, that he did not care what people said about him as long as they kept talking. I need not tell you that for a Spanish author making his first appearance before an English-speaking public, the same thing is more or less true. The reviews in the Times will be ever so good for the future publicity that your work will attract.

So here are my very warmest congratulations and the hope that the next book will do even better.

I understand from Francisco Ayala that you have just published in English translation his fine and famous book Muertes de perro. I am delighted that you and McMillan have been so fresighted [sic]. Ayala is one of the finest of modern writers in Spanish and too little known in this country. His fame in Spain and in South America is wide and growing. I hope that the publication of this book which marks his first appearance in English may be followed by other books and that it may win for him the recognition which he so well deserves. Querido Paco:

No veía yo inconveniente en la idea de que hicieras sobre Galdós y Unamuno cúanto se te antoje; posiblemente tienes más y mejores ideas sobre el tema que yo. Sobre El amigo Manso he de dar una conferencia en Las Palmas; si me decido a escribirla te mandaré copia, entre otras cosas para que hagas las discretas observaciones que se te ocurran.

También me propongo tratar de los Episodios Nacionales; quiero decir algo de lo que pienso de ellos, que dista bastante de las opiniones circulantes. Y la tercera charla galdosiana que prepare es un nuevo comentario de Miau, considerado exclusivamente como obra de imaginación.

Envidio tus días puertorriqueños, entregado a la molicie. Tango ganas de que me cuentes las noticias que ahora celosamente recatas, y me reclamo pensando en que el verano próximo podremos vernos con frecuencia durante los meses que coincidiremos en España. Tu viaje es ya inminente. El mío no tanto; saldré de Nueva York de hoy en dos meses, después de impartir sabiduría a los mozos de Colorado.

Un amigo me dice que se ha publicado la traducción inglesa de Muertes de perro y que vió en New York Times un artículo donde te comparaban con los más grandes novelistas, filósofos y teólogos de la antiguedad y la modernidad. Enhorabuena, muy de corazón; la noticia me dió alegría grande. Este es el comienzo de tu salida a un mundo donde habrás de ganar (amén de sabrosos dólares) el reconocimiento que mereces.

La solución que has encontrado para llevarte a Manolo me parece magnífica, y puedes imaginar cuanto siento no poder estar a vuestro lado para tantas y tantas cosas como juntos podríamos intentar. Es una pena, pero no creo pueda hacerse nada. Con fecha 28 de abril me notificaron oficialmente el aumento de sueldo y será difícil que pueda ir a otro sitio, no siendo a California, donde parecen desear retenerme y pagarme más que aquí.

Agnes y Javier, a quien dí tus saludos, corresponden a ellos cariñosamente; la primera se lamenta de que la tienes olvidada porque hace meses que no la [sic] escribes.
