Traducción de 'Muertes de perro'
Traducción de Muertes
de perro / Death as a way of life,
Macmillan, Nueva York, 1964.
En 1959 la editorial estadounidense Macmillan contactó con
Francisco Ayala para publicar en inglés
Muertes
de perro
. Tras múltiples retrasos por parte de Ilsa Barea, la persona a la
que se encargó en un primer momento la traducción, la novela vio la luz en 1964
bajo el título de
Death as a Way of Life

Dr. Francisco Ayala
Marques de Cubas, 6
Madrid, Spain
Dear Dr. Ayala,
As you know, Dan Hayes has
left Macmillan, and I am fortunate enough to be made responsible for Death as a Way of Life. I apologize for
the bad timing of my vacation plans, but I’m about to go away for three weeks,
and can’t be much practical help until my return (July 27).
Meantime, if there’s anything
we can do to help you, please count on my secretary, Mrs. Marian Herrick, to do
anything she can for you or for the book.
I wish I could answer fully
your good letter to Mr. Deighton before I go away. But I can assure you that it
is being carefully considered and that I will write more concretely when I
return.
Sincerely yours,
Mary T. Heathcote

Mr. William
Luscombe,
Michael Joseph Ltd.

Dear Mr. Luscombe:
Back at home in New
York City, I am sending you these lines in order to enclose some clips of the
criticism given here to the American edition of Death as a Way of Life. Perhaps they can be used in your promotion
campaign for the English one. I am ready to provide you with any other material
you may need.
If you consider
that it would be of help, please send me a set of printing proofs. I wil [sic] read them without delay and
communicate you whatever observation they suggest to me.
Sincerely yours
Francisco

Dear Mr. Ayala,
We have had a
letter from Keith Ellis of the University of Toronto and he says that he has a
collection of translations of your Short Stories and asks whether we would like
to consider them. Naturally I have said that I should be delighted to read the
translations. However, I thought it would be as well to write to you too just
to make certain that these stories are free for us to consider from the
copyright point of view. Presumably Macmillan are also considering them.
We have Death as a Way of Life down for March 22nd
next year.
Yours sincerely,
Raleigh Trevelyan
